If The Vibe’s Right

Cherriene, an indie artist from south Georgia, has blessed us with a 5 song EP. One of my favorite music releases of the summer, Cherriene takes us on a journey of love, lust and security - all the things we want and need in this life.

Cherriene starts us off with the hypnotic Slow Dance, which really reminds me of 90’s R&B at its peak. You can’t help but picture incense burning, brown skin, and candles burning like a classic R&B music video. The vocal ability Cherriene has to make you feel warm isn’t common in today’s R&B landscape, and stacking vocals is nearly a lost art.

Next, we have Journal Entry, which is all about creating a safe space for someone to be vulnerable. I love this song because there is no indication that this is strictly about a lover — it can be for a friend too, and Cherriene showcases her talent in writing on this particular record (no pun intended).

Heat is indeed that HEAT. This one is like a little Santana mixed with some R&B… “Mariiaaa Mariiaaaa, you remind me of a westside storryyy”. IYKYK. This is when you see them in the club and spark up a little conversation, and it gets heated. This is one of my favorite songs on this EP because it’s a fun vibe, and I love to do a little shimmy to it.

When we get to Slow Burn man… my favorite off this EP. It can absolutely stand next to Baby Rose’s music. The rich velvet sound that Cherriene gives us is unique to her, but you can still place her with some of the best in the R&B field.

We finish with Fever, which is a track that honestly leaves you wanting more. It almost feels like a transition song sound-wise, which makes us hope there’s more coming from Cherriene. And we’ll find out soon with an exclusive interview in the coming weeks.
